Majority Leader Essmann to Bullock: Stop ignoring Obamacare lawsuit (November 15, 2011)
Billings – With the U.S. Supreme Court's recent decision to hear the lawsuits over the Constitutionality of Obamacare, Montana Senate Majority Leader Jeff Essmann today asked Attorney General Steve Bullock to finally represent Montana in the case.
"The Constitutional merits of this case have been made clear," said Essmann. "Twenty six other states have made sure their citizens' voices will be heard by the highest court in the land, while Steve Bullock has done nothing. Montanans overwhelmingly oppose Obama's takeover of healthcare, and they're tired of another politician preventing their voice from being heard. It's time for Steve Bullock to do his job and tell the Supreme Court we don't need Obamacare's unconstitutional provisions in our state."
The U.S. Supreme Court announced on Monday that they will begin hearing arguments in the spring of 2012 on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act signed by President Obama in 2010. Attorney General Bullock's office to this date has repeatedly rebuffed requests to join a majority of states in a lawsuit against the act.

Majority Leader Essmann asks MDT to postpone Lincoln recreational vehicle & parade decisions (October 13, 2011)
Billings – Montana Senate Majority Leader Jeff Essmann today asked Montana Department of Transportation Director Tim Reardon to immediately postpone his agency's decisions to end recreational travel along MT Highway 200 and Lincoln's annual Fourth of July Parade.
"Montanans deserve better from their state government," said Essmann. "While we've come to expect this kind of top-down, unilateral decision from bureaucrats in Washington, D.C., I expect a more open, common sense approach from state agencies that deals with communities and recreational users as neighbors, not antagonists. The citizens of Lincoln have been forced for too long to deal with government actions impacting their livelihoods without their input, and OHV recreationists have been faced with the loss of trail access in too many parts of the state already. I call on new department Director Reardon to suspend these decisions and sit down with the people of Lincoln to alleviate economic and cultural impacts to this community as well."
The MDT decisions were reported today in two stories by the Great Falls Tribune:
Borrowing trouble: Snowmobiles, ATVs banned in Lincoln area ditches and
MDT pulls pin on parade. Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks report 9,682 snowmobilers recreated in the Lincoln area trail complex last year.

Jeff Essmann announces candidacy for Montana Governor on statewide Tele-Town Hall (October 4, 2011)
Billings – Montana Senate Majority Leader Jeff Essmann released the following statement after officially announcing his candidacy for Montana Governor tonight on a first of its kind telephone town hall:
The election of our next Governor is too important to kick it off with a staged press conference in front of party insiders and a few select supporters. All Montanans deserve to be a part of the process right from the start, instead of just reading it in the newspaper after it happens. That's why I opened up the lines to anyone who wanted to join and announced my candidacy to Montana voters directly and then listened to their feedback. As Governor, I'll serve our state the same way: in the most open and transparent administration our state has ever seen.
As a small businessman, I've seen firsthand what the Obama agenda is doing to Montana families. I'm running for Governor because our families deserve better from their state government. They deserve a Governor who'll stand up to the Obama administration's agenda, cut wasteful state spending, and lower taxes on Montana families and businesses that make long term investments and create jobs.
With over nine thousand Montana voters participating in the call, the event became the largest gubernatorial campaign announcement event in Montana history.
