Why I am running

Opening Statement from January 14, 2010 First Day of Filing Event at the Capitol

My name is Jeff Essmann, I represent Senate District 28 in Billings and I am also Chairman of the Montana Republican Legislative Campaign Committee. Republican candidates are here today to do our part to put Montana back to work. Now more than ever, Montana needs leaders who understand that more government doesn't mean more prosperity, Montana needs leaders who know that higher taxes don't lead to more jobs, and Montana needs leaders who understand that environmental obstructionism doesn't put food on the table for struggling families. Montana need leaders who know that bigger government is not the solution to our problems. I stand here today with many of my Republican colleagues and many of our new candidates because we want to put Montana back to work.

Legislative Goals. I strongly believe that improving the lives of Montanans means improving our economy through retention and recruitment of innovative and entrepreneurial small businesses. Small businesses create 70% of the new jobs in America and an astounding 92% in Montana. My goal as a legislator would be to focus my efforts on drafting and passing legislation which would set Montana apart and make it the most attractive state for entrepreneurs to start and grow their businesses, thereby creating new jobs for our children and succeeding generations.

My Stand on Taxes. I do not believe that our state tax burden should be increased. Increasing the tax burden on individuals and small business stifles the acquisition of capital needed to invest in new businesses and new jobs, which is the only real way to improve our economy. In order to reduce the onerous burden of property taxes, especially on our older citizens, I would support a sales tax as a replacement tax, not an additional tax.
